Putin supporters plan car rally Saturday

Moscow, Feb 16 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Supporters of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin are planning to organise a car rally in central Moscow Saturday, its organisers said.

Up to 1,500 people are expected to participate in the demonstration planned for Saturday evening, a group called Network of Putin Supporters said Wednesday in a statement.

A remix of Putin’s vocals of the popular jazz song Blueberry Hill will become the symbol of the rally, the organisers said, adding that CDs with the song will be distributed among rally participants.

Putin sang Blueberry Hill in English with jazz performers during a charity event for children diagnosed with cancer in St. Petersburg in December 2010. That concert then sparked a scandal when children hospitals complained that they had not received any money from the high-profile event.

The organisers were planning to submit an authorisation request for the rally to the Moscow Mayor’s Office Wednesday, one of the organisers said.

A Mayor’s Office official hinted that the rally was likely to be approved.
