Chandigarh, Feb 12 (IANS) Expressing grief over the death of two Punjabi brothers in Australia Thursday night, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday announced a grant of Rs.500,000 each to their family.
Badal has also urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to personally intervene in this matter and ask the Australian government to create a secure environment for Punjabi youths studying there.
With this incident, the deaths of Punjabi youths in Australia have risen to four in the last few months. Earlier, two young men - Nitin Garg and Ranjodh Singh - were killed in Australia.
There were reports that brothers Navdeep Singh Dhaliwal, 21, and Kanwaldeep Singh Dhaliwal, 19, were killed by an Indian youth following a dispute Thursday night over living arrangements and rent money.
The accused, 22, who has already been arrested, hails from Hoshiarpur district.
The brothers, who had gone to Perth in 2008 on a student visa, belonged to Sunam town in Sangrur district.
“I had sent my sons to Australia after selling my house. I was away to attend a wedding at Patiala when we got this information…I could not think about this even in my nightmares,” their father Swarn Singh said.
A Punjab government spokesman said necessary arrangements are being made to bring the bodies from Australia.
