Pune police chief gets notice from NHRC
August 12th, 2011 - 7:10 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) The Pune police commissioner has been issued notice by the apex human rights body for the firing on a farmers rally that left at least three people dead.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said in a statement Friday: “We received a complaint alleging that four farmers died in police firing in Pune. The farmers were protesting against the laying of a pipeline which led to skirmishes between them and the police Aug 9.”
“The commission has issued a notice to the Police Commissioner, Pune, calling for a report within four weeks in the matter,” it added.
At least three people were killed Tuesday in Bahuri village in Pune district when police opened fire at thousands of farmers who were protesting the government takeover of their land for a drinking water pipeline from Pavna Dam to the outskirts of Pune city.
Six policemen were suspended Thursday for firing on the rally.
