New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday asked the central government to urgently provide all necessary assistance to the West Bengal government to carry out relief and rehabilitation operations in the state hit by Cyclone Aila.
The cyclone battered coastal West Bengal and hit Kolkata Monday as it uprooted trees, electricity poles and thatched homes, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, killing 27 people and affecting 110,000 others. The army was called in for rescue operations in the worst hit South 24 Parganas district.
The CPI-M politburo expressed “deep concern at the loss of life and property caused by Cyclone Aila” and conveyed its “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the bereaved. The politburo also expressed its sympathies with those who have been affected by the cyclone.
“The politburo urges upon the central government to urgently provide all necessary assistance to the state government to help in rescue relief and rehabilitation operations,” the CPI-M said in a statement.
The politburo also appealed to the people to “contribute their might to help mobilise resources for the cyclone affected people” in the CPI-M ruled state.
“Contributions may be made to the West Bengal Chief Minister’s Relief Fund,” the statement added.
