Kolkata, Aug 16 (IANS) People from all walks of life came out on the roads in Kolkata Tuesday to register their protest against the arrest of social activist Anna Hazare in New Delhi.

Hazare and his key aides were arrested in New Delhi while readying to launch a hunger strike to press for a strong Lokpal bill.

Social activists, students from schools and colleges and office goers came out of their homes and work places to support Anna’s cause.

“It is unethical and unconstitutional to stop a peaceful movement by force. Have they (the government) gone mad,” asked Ratul Saha, a second year student of English Honours.

“”We support Anna Hazare and his crusade against corruption,” said Romila Kundu, a third year student of Mass Communication.

The protesters raised slogans against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government.

“These politicians are dacoits and are looting the country and that is why they are trying to stop a saint like Anna,” said Swapan Karmakar, a office-goer who on his way to his workplace, stood at a protest point in Park Street area and signed a sheet to register his protest.

Protests rocked several parts of Kolkata including Hazara, Park Street and Shyambazar.

As the news of Anna’s detention spread, students from various colleges came out on the streets to register their dissent against the detention.

“We live in a democracy and this is not the face of the democracy. This is a rehearsal of an emergency,” said Barun Das, a 65-year-old retired school teacher.
