Kolkata, Oct 12 (IANS) Trinamool Congress leader and Union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy Monday toured the violence-hit Arambag-Khanakul area in West Bengal’s Hooghly district and asked the people to unitedly protest the “atrocities” of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) cadres.
“I urge the people to be united and protest against the CPI-M-sponsored atrocities in Hooghly district. The days are not too far when we can dream of a better and peaceful government under the leadership of Trinamool Congress in the state,” Roy said.
“The Trinamool Congress will fight against the political violence launched by the communists across the state,” he said.
The Trinamool has claimed that seven supporters were injured in attacks perpetrated by the CPI-M.
Trinamool chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has claimed that five of the victims had bullet wounds while two others were hit with sharp weapons.
Mukul Roy also headed a rally by hundreds of Trinamool Congress activists in the area to protest the violent attacks on party supporters.
He said that Banerjee would visit Arambag Oct 25.
Violence broke out in the area Sunday morning when Trinamool and CPI-M supporters hurled bombs and exchanged gun fire, triggering tension in the district.
An uneasy calm prevailed the Arambag-Khanakul localities Monday.
