New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Prithvi Raj Sawhney of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a teacher by profession, Friday defeated Tulsi Ram Sablania of the Congress by 90 votes to become Delhi’s new mayor.
Sawhney got 178 votes and Sablania 88 out of the 275 votes cast in the poll. The Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Hari Chand Kardam withdrew his nomination before the balloting.
It was a cakewalk for Sawhney, whose party holds 172 seats in the 272-member house. The Congress has 73 members and the BSP 16. There are 10 independents.
Sawhney has taught for over 30 years in different schools. He represents Janakpuri (South) and was also a councillor from 1997 to 2000.
Before Friday’s election, he was the chairman of the MCD education committee.
Sawhney succeeds his party colleague Kanwar Sain. Each year a new mayor is selected by the city’s councillors.
