Price-rise to be major issue in parliament: AdvaniApril 14th, 2008 - 11:07 pm ICT by admin
Indore, April 14 (IANS) Lashing out against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for its failure to check inflation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Monday said the opposition would raise the issue in parliament. “The rise in prices will be raised as a principal issue during the parliamentary session that starts tomorrow (Tuesday),” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha told reporters here.
Advani was in Madhya Pradesh to participate in a function on the birth anniversary of Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar at Indore. He inaugurated a memorial to Ambedkar built at a cost of Rs.120 million at his birthplace. The area is now known as Ambedkar Nagar.
Speaking to reporters at Indore airport, Advani said prices of essentials were constantly rising. “The common man will make the Congress pay a heavy price in the elections for the inflation,” he said.
He said the increase in the number of millionaires in the country did not mean that the nation was prosperous. The real parameter of the nation’s prosperity was how many people from backward classes and weaker sections had become wealthy, Advani said.
He stated that a country like India can tackle a problem like inflation only when the farmers are provided with all facilities.
The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has betrayed the ‘aam aadmi’ (common man), which was the ruling coalition’s main plank in the 2004 election. “Price-rise means daily loot from the meagre family budget of the common man, the aam aadmi, in whose name the Congress sought the mandate in 2004,” he said.
The government’s figures that inflation has crossed 7 percent is an official admission of the UPA government’s utter failure to control prices of essential commodities, he said.
