Sen John Ensign Washington, Oct 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Republican Senator John Ensign is under pressure from all sides to resign, following the disclosures of his affair with a former campaign staffer and then he also got his mistress’s husband a job too. This all has sparked a massive investigation into his conduct.

“I can’t discuss this with you other than to say that there’s a preliminary investigation going on,” Senator Barbara Boxer told CNN’s John King. “And we will look at all aspects of this case as we do whenever there’s a case before us and try to get to the bottom of it as quickly as we can in fairness to all.”

Sen. Ensign himself acknowledged in July that he had had an affair with Cynthia Hampton, a former campaign staffer and once one of his top Senate aides. News reports later detailed how the Nevada Republican tried to hide the affair by finding a consulting and lobbying job for Doug Hampton, arranging for a $96,000 payment to the couple, and promoting his mistress and raising her pay around the time of their affair.

In a new and novel pressure strategy, TV ads are being run which will suggest John to resign. The ads start airing today and will run for a week in Las Vegas and Reno. They’ll hint at Senator John affair with his mistress Cynthia that he disclosed in July, and suggest a possible link between the senator’s opposition to the crucial health reform bill, and the massive amount of money that he has received in so-called campaign donations from the insurance industry. The figures are pegged at more than $800,000.
