President Obama to meet Dalai Lama in February
February 5th, 2010 - 1:50 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON D.C. (BNO News) – President Barack Obama is planning to meet with the Dalai later this month to assess Chinese objections, the White House Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs said on Thursday.
China has insisted President Obama not meet the Dalai Lama.
“China resolutely opposes the visit by the Dalai Lama to the United States, and resolutely opposes the U.S. leader having contact with the Dalai Lama in any name or any form,” Ma Zhaoxu, China´s Foreign Ministry spokesman, said Wednesday, Xinhua reported.
China has continued to claim Tibet as a region of their territory, though Tibetans have disagreed for many years.
The bilateral relations between China and the U.S. have been getting tense lately after the U.S. announced Friday that it planned to sell arms to Taiwan worth $6.4 billion, as well as an argument over censorship of the internet.
