Barack Obama INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (BNO NEWS) – President Obama responded after Senator Evan Bayh’s office announced he would not seek re-election for the U.S. Senate at the end of his current term.

“For more than two decades, Evan Bayh has devoted his career and his life to serving his fellow Hoosiers. During that time, he has fought tirelessly for Indiana’s working families, reaching across the aisle on issues ranging from job creation and economic growth to fiscal responsibility and national security,” President Obama said.

“I look forward to continuing to work with him on these critical challenges throughout the rest of the year. Michelle and I thank Senator Bayh for his leadership and service and wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors,” Obama added.

Sen. Bayh, 54, is currently serving his second term as U.S. Senator from Indiana. He expressed his desire to continue serving as a Senator for a third term but contrary to his previous statements he has changed his mind.

“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so in Congress has waned,” Senator Bayh said.

Bayh has never lost an election. He was elected as Indiana Secretary of State in 1986. He also served as Governor of Indiana in two terms, 1988 and 1992. Bayh was later elected for the U.S. Senate in 1998.

In 2004, he stepped into the spotlight by asking Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for his resignation after his mistakes regarding the Iraq war.
