Washington, Oct. 15, (THAINDIAN NEWS) President Barack Obama is proving once again why he is the rightful candidate to have won the Nobel Prize for Peace. According to the reports from various sources, the American President had celebrated the Hindu joyous festival of Diwali on Wednesday by lighting up earthen lamps (diyas) and candles.
In doing so, the president has surely won over a large section of the Asian community, who are known to be observing the festival of lights. The warm gesture on behalf of the president certainly marks as being the first of its kind in the history of the White House that any president is celebrating the Hindu festival. Though the ritual of lighting up the “diyas” had been initiated by Bush government since 2003, the former president had not actually been an active part of the ceremony ever.
On Wednesday, President Obama was clicked lighting several of the diyas that had been set up in the big mansion of the White House. After the practice was over, he had even bowed down to a Hindu priest, respectfully. The president has said, “While this is a time of rejoicing, it’s also a time for reflection, when we remember those who are less fortunate and renew our commitment to reach out to those in need.”
He had also made the event the forum for bringing in to existence a commission, that will be conducting a two year survey research on how to be going about with helping Asian Americans. The commission is reportedly going to be consisting of about 20 odd members.
