President greets nation on spring New Year

Pratibha Patil New Delhi, March 22 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil Thursday greeted the people of the country on the new year festivals of Chaitra Sukladi, Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Cheti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba.

In her message, Patil said: “On the auspicious occasion of Chaitra Sukladi, Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Cheti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba, I send my greetings to all those celebrating these festivals in different parts of the country.”

“May these festivals strengthen the bonds of unity amongst the people of different regions of the country,” she added.

The regional new year festivals are celebrated in various parts of the country.

The festivals, called Navreh in Kashmir, Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Gudi Padava in Maharashtra, and Cheti Chand by the Sindhi community, signify the advent of spring and fall on the first day of the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar.
