Pranab Mukherjee Kolkata, Aug 4 (IANS) Union Finance Minister and Congress stalwart Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee Thursday was made the general secretary of the party’s West Bengal unit besides becoming a member of the All India Congress Committee, a party leader said.

“Abhijit Mukherjee along with MLA (member of legislative assembly) Sukh Bilas Verma has been made general secretaries of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. Two posts of general secretaries were lying vacant so we decided to fill it up,” Congress general secretary and state in charge Shakeel Ahmed told IANS.

Abhijit, a former general manager of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), had plunged into politics after taking voluntary retirement from SAIL to contest the April-May assembly polls. He won from Birbhum district’s Nalhati constituency.

Abhijit has also been inducted into the All India Congress Committee (AICC) along with four other state party leaders, Ahmed said.
