Pranab supports Mamata on Singur land bill

Kolkata, June 11 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee described as a “good decision” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s move to bring in a bill in the assembly, rather than an ordinance, to return 400 acres of land to Singur farmers.
“It is a good decision,” said Mukherjee when asked what he thought of change in Banerjee’s stance from formulating an ordinance to bringing a bill on the Singur land issue.
“By passing a law in the assembly session, land will be given back by amending the clause of the law under which it was taken,” Mukherjee told reporters in Murshidabad.
Banerjee said Friday her government would not enforce the ordinance to return the Singur land to “unwilling” farmers from whom it was taken for Tata Motors’ Nano car project.
Instead, the chief minister said, the government will bring a bill on the issue in the budget session of the state assembly.
Banerjee Thursday announced that her government has promulgated an ordinance to acquire 400 acres of land at Singur to return it to the farmers, from whom it was taken “against their will” by the previous Left Front regime for the Tata Motors Nano small car project.
