Kolkata, April 13 (IANS) The Election Commission (EC) is looking into an allegation that Congress leader and union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee violated the model code of conduct in West Bengal, a senior electoral officer said Wednesday.
“We have received a complaint against Mukherjee for violating the EC’s model code of conduct. The allegation says he met party leaders and supporters in a circuit house in Murshidabad,” state Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta said in a media meet organised by the Kolkata Press Club.
According to EC guidelines, no political activities should be held in any government premises after the poll notification.
“We have asked the district electoral officer to study the complaint in depth,” said Gupta.
“The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has lodged a complaint alleging that Mukherjee held a meeting with party activists at the Beherampore circuit house in Murshidabad during his stay there Monday night,” Murshidabad district election officer (district magistrate) Parwez Ahmed Siddiqui told IANS.
