Ludhiana (Punjab), Nov 12 (IANS) The Election Commission has directed the deputy commissioner of Punjab’s Moga district to keep a watch on the activities of former state director general of police P.S. Gill.

Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi, who was here Saturday with a team to review arrangements for assembly elections in Punjab early next year, said that the poll panel had earlier received complaints against Gill.

“The directions (to Moga deputy commissioner) have been issued following complaints of misuse of official position by him (Gill) when he was DGP,” Qureshi told reporters here.

The opposition Congress had earlier complained to the poll panel that Gill, who retired in September, had been nursing political ambitions and was trying to misuse his official position (as DGP) to boost his electoral prospects.

Without specifying the exact dates when assembly poll will be held in Punjab, Qureshi said that the election process would be completed before March 13, 2011.

He said that it would be mandatory for voters in Punjab to bring along their photo-identity cards while coming to cast their votes.

Qureshi said that the EC has decided to allow proxy voting to defence personnel posted elsewhere in next year’s assembly poll. Under this, the defence personnel can authorize anyone to cast the vote on their behalf.
