Chandigarh, Oct 11 (IANS) Campaigning for elections to the 90-member Haryana assembly, slated to be held Tuesday, ended Sunday at 5 p.m.
A complete ban on the sale of liquor at all liquor vends, bars and restaurants in the state has been enforced from 5 p.m. Sunday to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The Election Commission has also directed the district election officers and the police in the state to ensure that all outsiders in the state’s 21 districts leave the constituencies immediately after the close of the campaign period.
“After the closure of campaign period, no campaign can take place within the constituency. Political functionaries and party workers who have been brought from outside the constituency should leave as their presence may undermine the atmosphere for free and fair poll,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sajjan Singh said Sunday.
Earlier, Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed two election rallies in Nuh town of the newly created district of Mewat and at Jhajjar town.
The main opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) also held an election rally at Uchana Kalan constituency from where INLD president and former chief minister Om Parkash Chautala is contesting against Finance Minister Birender Singh.
The Congress government in Haryana, led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, got the assembly dissolved seven months before its term ended to seek fresh assembly polls.
The Congress had fared well in the May Lok Sabha poll, winning nine out of 10 parliamentary seats in the state.
Counting of votes will be held Oct 22.
