Police seek legal opinion on complaint against N.D. Tiwari
December 30th, 2009 - 5:32 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Hyderabad, Dec 30 (IANS) The Andhra Pradesh Police is seeking legal opinion on complaints filed against former state governor N.D. Tiwari in connection with an alleged sex scandal.
Director General of Police R.R. Girish Kumar Wednesday said the police were examining the matter. “We are examining the matter from the legal aspect,” he added in reply to a query at a news conference.
Some women activists have lodged complaints against Tiwari, who resigned Saturday, a day after a Telugu channel telecast visuals of a man, purported to be Tiwari, with three women in a compromising position in Raj Bhavan.
Tiwari, who initially dismissed the story as a “tissue of lies”, later resigned on “health grounds”.
The complainants sought prosecution of 86-year-old Tiwari for immoral trafficking and molestation of women but the police have not yet registered a case.
Gopalakrishna Kalanidhi, an advocate, has also lodged a complaint with Hyderabad Police Commissioner, B. Prasada Rao, marking a copy to the DGP.
The advocate requested the police official to book a case against Tiwari under Section 6 of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act and Section 354 (molestation) and Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.
The complainant also argued that since Tiwari’s resignation was accepted by the president and he does not enjoy constitutional immunity anymore, criminal prosecution can be initiated against him.
