Chandigarh, Aug 12 (IANS) At least 500 Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) workers were detained by Chandigarh police Tuesday when they took out a procession to protest the cancellation of the allotment of 40 hectares of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board in Jammu and Kashmir. The police had to resort to cane charge to keep the situation under control as the protesters pelted stones and tried to cross the barricades.
“Over 500 BJP workers from all over Haryana had gathered at Sector 7-8 roundabout Tuesday at 1 p.m. They blocked traffic and were demanding to meet governor A.R. Kidwai,” said Raghbir Singh, station in-charge of Sector-26 police station.
“Initially, it was a peaceful protest but then they tried to cross the police barricades,” added Singh.
“The protesters included a number of former MPs and MLAs (member of legislative assembly) from Haryana,” Singh said.
