Poles vote in presidential run-off (Lead)
July 4th, 2010 - 5:15 pm ICT by IANSWarsaw, July 4 (DPA) Poles went to the polls Sunday in a presidential run-off vote held early to find a successor to Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash in April.
Voter frequency was at 2.52 percent by 8 a.m., two hours after the polls opened Sunday, said the state electoral commission at a press conference.
Some 30.5 million eligible voters were set to cast their ballots at around 25,000 polling stations countrywide in the runoff that follows a first round of voting June 20, in which no candidate secured a majority.
Bronislaw Komorowski, of the centre-right Civic Platform party, having won around 41 percent of the vote in the first round, was the favourite to win in the run-off.
His opponent Jaroslaw Kaczynski, of the right-wing Law and Justice party, received some 36 percent in the first round. Analysts said Kaczynski, the twin brother of the late president, could still win the election after he gained ground over Komorowski in a recent debate.
Polls would stay open until 8 p.m., with the first exit polls to follow. Official results are expected early Monday.
