PM wishes Jyoti Basu a speedy recovery (Lead)

Kolkata, Jan 16 (IANS) Describing Jyoti Basu as a “great son of India”, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday wished the critically ill Marxist patriarch a speedy recovery.
“I would like to make a mention of another very distinguished old boy of St. Xavier’s and a great son of India, Shri Jyoti Basu. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and I wish him a speedy recovery,” the prime minister said, addressing the 150th anniversary celebrations of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School here.
Basu, hospitalised at the AMRI Hospital since Jan 1, is very critical after suffering multi-organ failure.
The prime minister had visited the AMRI hospital Jan 7 and offered to arrange for expert doctors for his treatment.
Following his offer, the attending doctors held a tele-conference with specialists at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
