PM to address meet on electoral reforms in Guwahati

Manmohan Singh New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address a national consultation meet on electoral reforms in Guwahati July 2-3, an official release said.

The meet will be a follow-up to a series of seven regional meetings on electoral reforms being organised by the union law ministry in collaboration with the Election Commission.

Before the meeting, the regional consultation meet of northeastern states will be held in Guwahati June 12, the release added.

The chief ministers of all the eight northeastern states, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and the other two election commissioners will attend the June 12 meet.

The poll panel’s initiatives to check criminalisation of politics and those related to funding of elections, better management of polls, regulation of political parties will come up for discussion at both the meetings in Guwahati, the release said.

Citizens groups and individuals would be also invited to the meet. Representatives of political parties, jurists, academics, journalists and civil liberty activists will also attend, the statement added.
