PM should step down, go for elections: Trinamool MP

Kolkata, Sep 18 (IANS) Hours after an aggressive Trinamool Congress decided to withdraw their support from the UPA government, party MP Kunal Ghosh demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should step down and go for elections to se whether the price rise and reforms are acceptable to the masses.

“He is talking about reforms. Has he sought the people’s advice on it? He should step down and go for elections and see whether his reforms are at all acceptable to the masses,” Ghosh said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday withdrew her Trinamool Congress party’s support to the UPA government, but both she and the Congress indicated a last minute patch up may still be possible.

Banerjee announced the decision after a three-hour meeting of party leaders in Kolkata, four days after the central government unleashed a wave of reforms aimed at kickstarting a stagnant economy.

At her aggressive best, Banerjee told the media that Trinamool’s six ministers — one cabinet and five ministers of state — would submit their resignations to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi Friday.

“Before accepting the resignation of Trinamool Ministers, he (Manmohan Singh) himself should resign because it was on the basis of the support of Trinamool that in 2009 he had submitted his claim for forming the government,” said Ghosh.
