PM praises Meira Kumar’s ‘iron fist, velvet voice’

New Delhi, Jan 5 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday heaped praise on Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, saying she had an “iron fist beneath a velvet voice”.
“I am pleased that the speaker facing these challenges … is a very distinguished woman, Meira Kumar, who sheathes the proverbial iron fist beneath a velvet voice,” he told the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Countries (CSPOC) here.
Meira Kumar, 64, was elected unopposed as the first woman speaker of the Lok Sabha in June last year.
