New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday hailed the Indian press, saying that “an alert press” is helpful in the fight against corruption.
“An alert press and an aware citizenry can be very helpful in the fight against corruption,” he said in his address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort.
“The Indian press is known for its independence and activism throughout the world.”
He said the central government had enacted the Right to Information (RTI) legislation that has enabled “our press and people to keep a strict watch on the work of the government”.
“Today many government decisions, which in the absence of this Act would escape public scrutiny, are coming to light. I believe that this is a big step forward in eradicating corruption,” he added.
