Bangalore, Oct 10 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday undertook an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas in Karnataka and announced an immediate central aid of Rs.1,000 crore.
After an aerial survey of Raichur and adjoining areas in north Karnataka, the worst affected in the Sep 30-Oct 2 rains and flashfloods, Manmohan Singh said further assistance would be considered after a central team assesses the damage.
“There will not be any delay in sending the central team. It would be done as soon as the state submits a memorandum (giving details of the damage and cost for rehabilitation),” Singh told a press conference at Raichur, about 400 km from here.
Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa briefed Singh on the rehabilitation work taken up by the state government and the central help needed for the massive work as over 350,000 houses have been damaged, leaving more than a million people homeless.
The state government has assessed that crops in over 25 lakh (2.5 million) hectares are lost due to the calamity.
More than 220 people have been killed and around 5,000 cattle have perished in the three days of rain that wreaked havoc as the southwest monsoon was withdrawing.
Singh had announced an equal amount as advance relief to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, which too has been badly hit by the floods.
A delegation of the state Congress party led by its president R.V. Deshpande also submitted a separate memorandum to Singh seeking large central help to rebuild the devastated areas.
