New Delhi, June 7 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday demanded an explanation from Home Minister Shivraj Patil on whether his official residence was used by his son Shailesh for business purposes as reported by a newspaper. “The nation has a right to know if the residence of a senior cabinet minister like Shivraj Patil was misused for personal gains by his son. The BJP demands a clarification from him in this regard,” said party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy, reacting to a news report.

“We want to know his stand on four issues. One, whether his son used the official residence to pull strings. Two, if any environment norms were flouted in the industry (located in Ambala in Haryana) in which Patil’s family has a stake. Three, Patil’s stand on the allegations that his family had misused his position to get favours for a sugar mill in Latur (in Maharashtra), and four, whether excise rules were bypassed,” Rudy said.

The Indian Express reported that Shailesh Patil and his wife Archana had cited the home minister’s official residence, 4, Janpath, as their address when they became part of a Rs.1.49-billion distillery project in Ambala.

“I feel satisfied that such an investment in a rural area brings jobs for poor farmers,” Shailesh Patil was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Shivraj Patil is a native of Latur. Shailesh lives with him at his official residence here.
