Party leaders should be selected through merit only: Jaitley

Lucknow, Sep 21 (IANS) Calling upon his partymen and political opponents to draw inspiration from former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley here Wednesday said political leaders must be chosen on meritocracy and not dynastic politics.
“If we want to have great leaders like Atalji, meritocracy should be made the sole criterion for selecting the leaders of political parties. However, in today’s time there are some political outfits that prefer dynastic politics only for selecting the leadership,” Jaitley said without taking name of any party.
“The power of democracy will emerge in a true sense when the leadership of our country is decided on meritocracy. It’s really unfortunate that some political parties sideline the political experience, hard work, and other such qualities while selecting the leadership,” added Jaitley while launching the “Samagra Atalji” project in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday night.
The project is for documentation, collection of photographs, letters, write-ups, interviews, poems, speeches and videos of Vajpayee.
The party’s MP from Lucknow Lalji Tandon, who was also present at the function, declared: “I see Atalji’s image in Arun Jaitley. His parliamentary skills, thoughts, and oratory skills always are similar to that of the great leader.”
