Parliament remembers martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev (Lead)

Meira Kumar New Delhi, March 23 (IANS) The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha Wednesday paid tribute to martyred freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on the day they were hanged by the then British rulers 80 years ago.

“Eighty years ago, on March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev attained martyrdom to liberate the nation from the shackles of colonialism and imperialism. The courage, bravery and patriotism of these martyrs will always be a source of inspiration to the youth of the country,” Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said in a reference soon after the house met for the day.

“On this occasion, let us pay our homage to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev and all those martyrs who laid down their lives in the freedom struggle,” she said, following which the members of the house observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the freedom fighters.

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Hamid Ansari said: “Their sacrifice has immortalised them.”

“Let us pledge to uphold the cherished values for which they gave their lives,” Ansari said, observing that on this day the three freedom fighters were hanged in a Lahore prison by the British rulers in 1931.

The upper house then observed a minute’s silence to pay homage to them.

Soon after, Lok Janshakti Party leader Ram Vilas Paswan said March 23 is also the birth anniversary of socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia.

“Today is the last day of the birth centenary of Ram Manohar Lohia which was being marked from 2010 to 2011. We urge the government to establish an educational institution in his name and give him the Bharat Ratna,” he said raising the issue during zero hour.
