Palestine denies reports of reconciliation with Hamas
June 19th, 2010 - 6:06 pm ICT by IANSRamallah, June 19 (IANS) A Palestinian official denied Saturday reports that President Mahmoud Abbas had accepted a reconciliation plan proposed by Islamic Hamas movement to end the intra Palestinian division.
“I can’t say that Hamas has proposed an initiative for reconciliation to accept it,” chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told the Gaza-based al-Qud radio, Xinhua reported.
A Hamas leader said Friday that Abbas and Egypt had accepted a reconciliation proposal given to the Arab League chief Amr Mussa during his visit to Gaza last week.
The two major Palestinian factions, Fatah and Hamas, have been bitterly divided since 2007 as the Islamic movement overthrew pro-Abbas forces in Gaza and grabbed hold of the territory. Abbas’ Fatah party only rules the West Bank now.
