Pakistan’s Information Minister Sherry Rehman resigns: Report (Lead)

Islamabad, March 14 (IANS) Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Sherry Rehman Saturday resigned from her post due to differences over the government’s media policy, Geo TV reported, citing officials.The news came at a time when a high level meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari in chair was underway at the Aiwan-e-Sadr here, the report said. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Interior Advisor Rehman Malik and Sherry Rehman were also present in the meeting.

The minister resigned due to her differences with the government over its media policy, the TV channel quoted an official as saying on condition of anonimity.

On Friday, the government blocked the telecast of Geo and Aaj TV channels in several Pakistani cities.

Sherry Rehman had earlier promised to resign from her post if any curbs are imposed on the Pakistani media.

President Asif Ali Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar, however, denied that she had stepped down. Her information ministry has not confirmed the news.
