Overseas Bengalis urged to register names in electoral rolls

Kolkata, Feb 18 (IANS) West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta Friday issued a notification inviting overseas Bengalis to register their names in the electoral rolls.”The notification enabling overseas electors to register their names in the electoral rolls was issued today (Friday) in this regard. The addresses of the registration officers of each of the 294 assembly constituencies of the sate can be seen on the website www.ceowestbengal.nic.in ,” said Gupta.

Under the amended rule of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which has come into effect from Feb 10, 2011, every overseas elector is entitled to register his or her name in the electoral roll of the constituency in which his or her place of residence in India, as mentioned in the passport, is located, he said.

The individual should be an Indian citizen living abroad and not have acquired citizenships of any other country and not be included in the electoral rolls, according to the law.

Gupta said Bengalis living abroad and desirous of registering their names in the electoral roll have been invited to submit claim application in Form 6A for registration in the electoral roll.

The claim application in Form 6A may be either submitted in person directly to the registration officer of the constituency concerned or sent by post along with the documents mentioned in the form and the guidelines.

If the claim application is sent by post, it should be accompanied by photocopies of the relevant pages of the passport duly attested by the competent official of the Indian mission in the country concerned, added Gupta.
