Over a dozen injured in Srinagar clashes (Lead)
June 14th, 2010 - 7:55 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, June 14 (IANS) Over a dozen people, including five security personnel, were injured Monday as agitators protesting the death of a class 12 student, clashed with police in Srinagar for the third consecutive day.
Meanwhile, doctors at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) described as “very critical” the condition of 26-year-old Rafiq Bangroo, who sustained serious head injuries in the clashes Saturday and is on life support system at the hospital.
Police said stone pelting mobs engaged police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers in clashes at Saida Kadal, Kalamdanpora, Nawabazar, Hyderpora crossing, Tangbagh (Safa Kadal), Eidgah, Narwara, Nawa Kadal, Dalgate, Kralpora, Maisuma and Chattabal areas of the city.
Reports of stone pelting were also received from Sopore town in north Kashmir and Kulgam district in south Kashmir.
A senior police officer said the deployed security men acted with complete restraint and dispersed the mobs with minimum force.
“The situation was comparatively better today (Monday) even though miscreants tried to engage deployed forces in stone pelting clashes at some places in Srinagar,” the officer told IANS.
Meanwhile, life remained paralysed across the Valley for the third consecutive day Monday due to the separatist shutdown and restrictions imposed in old city areas of Srinagar.
Hardline separatist leader, Syed Ali Geelani had called for a protest shutdown and a march Monday to express solidarity with the family of the student, Tufail Ahmad Mattoo, 18, killed in clashes with the security men in the old city’s Rajouri Kadal area Friday.
Fearing more violence, authorities Monday clamped restrictions in old city areas falling under five stations for the third day running.
