Over 4,000 people held in Delhi during protest

New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Delhi Police Monday arrested 4,380 protesters, including senior leaders of various political parties, during a nationwide shutdown called over rising fuel prices.
“As many as 3,435 people were arrested from north Delhi, 400 from central Delhi which included areas like Chandni Chowk and ITO, 80 from east Delhi, 70 from south Delhi and several others from other parts of the capital,” a police officer said.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president Sharad Yadav and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur courted arrested at Chandni Chowk while Left party leaders Brinda Karat, D. Raja and A.B. Bardhan were detained at ITO.
Major markets such as Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Greater Kailash, Kirti Nagar and Rajouri Garden were shut. Protesters also forced traders to shut shop at Khan Market to enforce the shutdown, called by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Left parties.
Thirty one buses were damaged across the capital causing traffic jams and inconvenience to the commuters.
