Bhubaneswar, Feb 9 (IANS) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Orissa Higher Education Minister Samir Dey Monday submitted his resignation owning moral responsibility for the debacle of his party in the recently concluded corporation elections, official sources said.
“I have received the resignation letter and forwarded it to the governor for acceptance,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters at the state secretariat Monday.
The election for the 54-ward Cuttack Municipal Corporation was held on Feb 6. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the BJP had contested the election separately.
The result was out on Feb 8. BJP which had a majority in the outgoing corporation won only two seats. On the other hand, the BJD headed by Patnaik secured an absolute majority winning in 37 wards.
Dey, who represents Cuttack in the state assembly Sunday offered to resign owning moral responsibility for the party’s poor show and sent a letter to the state BJP president Suresh Pujari.
The party accepted his offer and asked him to submit a formal resignation to the chief minister. Dey submitted his formal resignation Monday.
