oregon1Jan 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) There is reason enough for all the Measure 66 and 67 supporters to celebrate after the election results came out. Measure 66 and 67 secured 11 out of 67 counties in Oregon. The results are really crucial for the Oregonians as it will partly determine their future. The supporters were truly happy as their proposals were warmly accepted by people and they won the battle.

Measure 66 and 67 promised to provide a lot of advantages to the people. It will take care of a betterment in education. It will also ensure health care, public safety and various other facilities. In short it will see an increasing number of public schools, public works and public services come up and take care of their maintenance.

As nothing can have only positive sides, so is the Measure 66 and 67 plan. It definitely will see an upliftment in public care services but it will also mean a hike in tax rates. Measure 66 will increase the income tax which is paid by households earning $250,000 or more annually. It will also raise the amount payable by individual filers who earns $125,000 or more. Measure 67 on the other hand will raise the state’s $10 minimum corporate income tax. Even though there will be an increase in tax, perhaps it is worth the benefits they are ensuring.

The results of the Measure 66 and 67 was pretty good in which Measure 66 received 54.2% “Yes” and 45.8% “No” in the Statewide Results while Measure 67 received 53.7% “Yes” and 46.3% “No” in the same. Hope the hard won Measure 66 and Measure 67 results benefit the people. Time will tell whether the results will prove to be productive for Oregon or not.

I just read the two measures. They include the actual personal and corporate tax rates. Ouch! We own a “mom ‘n pop” business. Given what I read, It’d be painful were we in Oregon (especially now). Fortunately, we’re in Texas.

If you don’t have any compelling reason to stay in or move to Oregon, there are many states much less hostile to those wanting to make money.

last time i looked there were only 36 counties in Oregon. Perhaps if we had 67 counties we would have defeated this measure. I have already had a call of an investor saying he isn’t going to buy property in Oregon because of these results. pat p

Unfortunately measure 67 also changes the way that corporations get taxed, taxing them on sales instead of profit. This is definitely a hidden tax increase of epic proportions, and since the corporations will simply pass the costs on to consumers, it means that Oregonians will be paying a sales tax (albeit indirectly), something we are as a whole greatly opposed to. If more of the uninformed “mob” in the urban counties would have actually read the measures instead of just listening to the pro and con radio ads, I think 67 would have failed.

Not only can the writer not count the correct number of Oregon counties, she has no concept of the long range effects of the tax increases upon the folks and businesses who provide most of the employment, in Oregon. At least one economist has predicted an outmigration of 8,000 tax filers, annually. What will that do to the state’s revenue, long term?

I’m a small business on the Oregon Coast and I will plan on closing my shop and moving out of Oregon at the end of my current lease. Too much welfare and too many obstacles to entrepreneurship here. Hard to believe.

I am a tax consultant in Oregon and I’ll tell you what the immediate impact this will have. The $10 “tax” on corps is not a tax and if you were a corp or an exec in one you’d know that…or if you had asked someone who owns one. It’s a fee for the privilege of doing business in Oregon. Going from $10 to $150 is no big deal. It’s going to hit the c-corps now but soon will hit the small mom and pop s-corps and LLC’s. Taxes are still levied on these organizations either directly or indirectly…but make no mistake we’ve been paying taxes on our profits all along…I’m a single ownere s-corp. But raising the tax rate is really bad timing. Now for the sales tax they snuck in and you guys bought it….because they don’t dare call it a sales tax…we always vote them down. You don’t think you’ll pay? Trickle down, remember? These measures are going to hurt our state. It’s one more step of making us dependant on the government….and you can fill in the rest (see most of Europe).

Never raise taxes in a recession. Economics 101. The Kool Aid drinkers who voted for these measures and the rest of us really got taken with these two measures. You’ll see.

What a sham, what a shame.
