Opposition meets Kerala governor over address to assembly
April 7th, 2010 - 11:03 pm ICT by IANSThiruvananthapuram, April 7 (IANS) A group of opposition legislators Wednesday evening met Kerala Governor R.S. Gavai to point out a serious lapse on the part of the state cabinet, which they said failed to approve the governor’s address before he read it out Feb 24 in the state assembly.
Speaking to IANS, senior opposition legislator Joseph M. Puthuserry (Kerala Cong- M), who first raised this issue, said Gavai gave them a patient hearing and is aware of the lapse that occurred on the part of the V.S. Achuthanandan government. Puthuserry had earlier sent a query on the issue to the state chief secretary under the Right to Information Act.
“We showed him (Governor Gavai) the reply that I got from the office of Chief Secretary Rudra Ganagadharan, which said the cabinet meeting held on Feb 17 did not take up the clearing of the governor’s address,” Puthuserry said. “See, this is a serious lapse and a constitutional impropriety,” he added.
Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan earlier in the day told reporters that the claim that the cabinet failed to accord prior approval to Gavai’s policy address to the state legislature at the beginning of the budget session was nothing but a baseless allegation.
