Only Congress can provide stable government: SoniaMay 2nd, 2009 - 8:05 pm ICT by IANS
Shimla, May 2 (IANS) Slamming rival political parties for targeting the Congress’ prime ministerial candidate, party chief Sonia Gandhi Saturday said her party was the only one that can provide a stable government under the leadership of Manmohan Singh.
“The Congress party is the only party that can provide a stable government under the leadership of Manmohan Singh,” she said in her 15-minute election speech from the historic Ridge in the Himachal pradesh capital.
“The country needs the Congress… a strong government is the need of the hour and the Congress is the only party that can give a strong, secular government,” she said, adding their fight against terrorism would continue and they did not need any certificate (from the opposition on the issue).
Taking a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Gandhi blamed the party for its handling of the Kandahar crisis in 1999.
“It’s the BJP government which had released the terrorists as guests,” she noted.
The Congress chief also criticised the various fronts coming up in the country.
“Tarah tarah ke morche ban rahe hain desh me, par inka lakshya sirf PM ki kursi hai (there are many kind of political fronts being formed in the country, but their only aim is to become the prime minister),” she said.
“In fact this (the race for the post of the prime minister) has become a fashion these days,” she added.
Sonia Gandhi said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had not done any discrimination with Himachal Pradesh which is run by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the state was getting all benefits of the central government’s schemes.
She expressed concern over the decision of the state government to review the appointments of more than 6,000 teachers appointed by the earlier Congress government.
The four Lok Sabha seats of Himachal Pradesh - Shimla (reserved), Mandi, Hamirpur and Kangra - will go to the polls May 13.
In the 2004 general elections, the Congress had won the Shimla, Kangra and Mandi parliamentary seats, while the BJP got the Hamirpur seat.
