One killed, BSP legislator held in poll violence

Lucknow, Dec 22 (IANS) In two separate cases of local bodies polls related violence in Uttar Pradesh Wednesday, one person was killed in Azamgarh district while a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator was held for allegedly holding in captivity over a dozen voters in Bulandshahr district. Mahendra Yadav was killed in a gunfight between two rival political groups during the polling for local bodies in Azamgarh district, about 300 km from here, while three others were injured. One of them, Ram Awadh, was battling for life at the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) Medical College Hospital.
In anther case of violence during the block chief’s poll, criminal turned ruling BSP legislator Guddu Pandit was arrested for allegedly holding more than a dozen voters in captivity in Bulandshahr district.
“A complaint was made by a candidate, Brijendra Singh, who alleged that the BSP MLA had kidnapped 14 members of the Block Development Committee, who form the electoral college for the block pramukh (chief) elections,” an official said.
“Guddu Pandit, his brother and a dozen of their cohorts were arrested after a raid by the police confirmed the complaint,” he added.
