Office of New York Governor Paterson sends disapproving letter to New York Times
February 10th, 2010 - 3:26 pm ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )ALBANY, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – The office of New York Governor David Paterson on Tuesday sent a disapproving letter to the New York Times regarding recent controversy that led to rumors of Governor Paterson’s resignation.
Secretary to Governor Paterson Lawrence Schwartz sent the letter to New York Times’ Public Editor, Clark Hoyt. The letter expressed a “deep disappointment in the approach taken by the New York Times in the course of compiling a profile of Governor Paterson in recent days.”
The rumors that have been stirred up are the result of claims in internet blogs that Governor Paterson will resign after an as-yet unpublished New York Times profile that have spawned numerous speculations. It wasn’t immediately clear what the topic of the profile is, but it is understood that the New York Times has been preparing the profile over a period of several weeks.
The letter states that the Governor personally telephoned the Times’ political editor, Carolyn Ryan, suggesting that if the paper had evidence to support a serious allegation that it had a duty to inform him to allow him an opportunity to respond. If it did not have such evidence, it had an obligation to counter the false accusations wrongly attributed to the Times’ upcoming article. Ryan allegedly assured him that the profile will not contain anything like the salacious rumors being circulated, but objected on the issue of doing anything to stop them.
Claiming that the Times did nothing to correct the public record, the letter insisted that the paper should have made a public clarification as a matter of common decency, if not journalistic ethics.
“We ask that in your role as Public Editor you undertake an inquiry of the propriety of the paper’s actions and decisions that allowed this sorry set of events to unfold. Unfortunately, it is not in your power nor the New York Times’ to undo the damage that has been already been done in this case.”
On Monday, despite recent controversy, Governor Paterson personally made himself available to the Times’ Editorial Board for an extended discussion of issues, reportedly, nothing justifying suggestions of resignation was brought up.
