Washington, Feb 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Tuesday, President Barack Obama unveiled his plans to break ground on the first nuclear power plant to be built since the horrible accident in 1979. The partial core meltdown on Three Mile Island was the largest nuclear power accident in American History.
Even though many environmentalists are worried about the safety risks that nuclear power proposes,President Obama stated that nuclear power has to play a vital role in an energy policy that will cut greenhouse emissions and help the United States overcome it’s need of foreign oil. “We have to build a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in America,” Obama told journalists,” We are announcing roughly eight billion dollars in loan guarantees to break ground on the first new nuclear plant in our country in nearly three decades.”
Obama said that this type of energy is needed to meet America’s growing energy needs as well as to prevent the worst consequences of changes in climate. “Make no mistake: whether it is nuclear energy, or solar, or wind, if we fail to invest in these technologies today, we’ll be importing them tomorrow.” A law passed in 2005 authorizes the Energy Department to guarantee loans if those loans are for projects that will help to reduce the greenhouse emissions.
Two 1100 megawatt nuclear reactors at an existing nuclear facility in Burke Georgia will be reconstructed, according to a White House spokesperson. When they are completed, they will be able to provide power for 550,000 homes. This will bring thousands of jobs in construction over the next few years as well as approximately 850 permanent jobs to Georgia. Obama added , “This will pay off in employment opportunities in years to come, and this is only the beginning.”
