Obama pays tribute to fallen seals
August 9th, 2011 - 11:47 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, Aug 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) US President Barack Obama has paid tribute to the US Special Navy Seals who were killed in a recent Taliban attack in Afghanistan. The attack took place on Saturday. The White House insists that the latest attack will not cause the US army to revise their war strategy.
The Seals and eight others were killed in one of the deadliest attacks on US forces when the Taliban launched a rocket-propelled grenade on the CH-47 Chinook helicopter that they were traveling in. The Seals take thousands of night surveillance in Afghanistan every year.
Obama during his address on Standard and Poor’s downgrading of US’s debt obligation said, “These men and women put their lives on the line for the values that bind us together as a nation.”
With the death of Osama bin Laden, the US war in Afghanistan has become widely unpopular with several people calling for the withdrawal of the US army.
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta insists that the war is still relevant. He said that, “As heavy a loss as this was, it would even be more tragic if we allowed it to derail this country from our efforts to defeat al-Qaida and deny them a safe haven in Afghanistan.”
