Obama again postpones trip to Indonesia, Australia and Guam

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — U.S. President Barack Obama has been forced to again cancel his trip to Australia, Indonesia and Guam as his administration tries to manage what is believed to be the worst environmental disaster in American history.

Obama telephoned Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday night to express his ‘deep regret’ that he had to postpone his Asian trip, which had been scheduled to take place later this month. “The President looked forward to rescheduling so that he can visit both countries soon,” said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who did not give an indication of when a new trip could be expected.

“President Obama underscored his commitment to our close alliance with Australia and our deepening partnership with Indonesia,” Gibbs added. “He plans to hold full bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Rudd and President Yudhoyono on the margins of the G-20 meeting in Canada.” The G-20 will meet in Toronto late this month.

Thursday’s cancellation was the second time he scrubbed a planned trip to Australia and Indonesia. Obama originally scheduled to travel there in March but canceled at the last minute to stay in D.C. in order to lobby for the passage of his health care legislation.

This time, Obama was forced to cancel the trip because of the continuing environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, which has been described as the worst in American history.
