Not in the race for PM post: Nitish Kumar

Bharatiya Janata Party Patna, May 2 (IANS) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Saturday maintained that he was not in the running for the prime minister’s post, a day after a senior Janta Dal-United (JD-U) leader suggested his name as a possible candidate for the top job.
“I am not in the race for the prime minister’s post,” Nitish Kumar told reporters here before leaving for campaigning.

“Not even in my dreams have I thought that I will become PM,” he said in Hindi.

The leader stressed that he was happy with his current job as Bihar chief minister.

“I don’t think I am a person of that stature to claim the post of PM,” Nitish Kumar added.

He made it clear that being chief minister was itself a big responsibility given to him by the people of Bihar to develop the state and he was busy doing just that.

JD-U spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari had Friday said here that Nitish Kumar could well be a prime ministerial candidate. Tiwari, a Rajya Sabha MP, stunned JD-U alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by saying that Nitish Kumar would be a better candidate than Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, as indicated by a few BJP leaders.

Interestingly, Nitish Kumar’s political rivals - Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Ram Vilas Paswan - have earlier publicly expressed their prime ministerial ambitions.
