Washington DC, Jan 31 (THAINDIAN NEWS) New York senator Charles Schumer, is leading a campaign to have the synthetic drug which is often sold as bath salt banned.

The availability of the drug and its relative cheap price has got many people worried. The fear it will be easy for juveniles and the youth to have access to the drug easily. Currently it is quite legal to sell and purchase the drug from pharmacy shops, supermarkets, gas stations and many other places. It is often marketed under names like “Tranquility” and “Zoom 2”.

The drug has similar effect as that of cocaine and methamphetamines. There are reports that the drug causes hallucinations and suicidal thoughts. Officials are now worried it will become a menace.

Schumer believes “by calling them bath salts they’re trying to deliberately mislead people into thinking they are an everyday product. These dangerous drugs are sold in convenience stores smoke shops and on line for as little as fourteen to forty dollars.”

Schumer currently wants the sale of the drug banned in New York State. Subsequently he is working with the state’s governor, Andrew Cuomo for that to happen.

Schumer’s call is echoed throughout the United States. There are calls for the drug’s sales to be outlawed and its distribution highly regulated.
