New law to replace emigration act soon
May 5th, 2010 - 9:38 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 5 (IANS) The government will shortly introduce the Emigration Management Bill, 2010, to replace the existing Emigration Act, 1983, to fight illegal migration and human trafficking, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) Vayalar Ravi Wednesday informed parliament.
“The proposed bill is aimed at transforming emigration into a simple, transparent, efficient and humane economic process, facilitate legal migration, prevent illegal migration/ human smuggling, enable ethical recruitment practices, and enhance protection and welfare of emigrant workers,” said Ravi in the Lok Sabha.
Indian workers are in demand abroad in various sectors, including manufacturing industries. The MOIA records show 4.5 million Indian workers in the Gulf countries alone.
In the last four years, the ministry has received 728 complaints against registered and unregistered overseas recruitment agencies for illegal and unethical conducts.
“The policy of the government is to facilitate orderly and legal emigration of Indian workers, discourage illegal/irregular migration and ensure the protection and welfare of emigrants,” he added.
