Nelson Mandela discharged from hospital (Lead)
February 26th, 2012 - 10:20 pm ICT by IANSJohannesburg, Feb 26 (IANS) Former South African president Nelson Mandela was discharged from hospital Sunday after doctors declared nothing was “seriously wrong” with his health, the government said in a statement.
The 93-year-old Mandela was hospitalised Saturday after doctors advised specialist medical attention for a long-standing abdominal complaint.
A diagnostic procedure performed on Mandela indicated that nothing was seriously wrong with him, and doctors decided to send him home, Xinhua cited a South African presidency statement as saying.
Mandela is relaxed and comfortable, surrounded by his family, the statement added.
Saturday afternoon, Mandela underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy to determine the cause of his longstanding abdominal complaint.
“Madiba has had a long-standing abdominal complaint and doctors feel it needs proper specialist medical attention,” South African President Jacob Zuma was quoted as saying Saturday by the Daily Telegraph.
Zuma’s spokesman Mac Maharaj said the hospital admission was pre-planned and “not a major issue”.
Mandela last appeared in public at the final of the football World Cup hosted by South Africa in July 2010.
Born July 18, 1918, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, a year before he was elected the country’s first black president in South Africa’s first all-race vote. He served one term before stepping down in 1999.
