The prisoners will be freed from jails across the country, according to an order signed by President U Thein Sein, the president’s office said in a statement.
The move was taken “out of consideration of gaining stability, eternal peace, national consolidation of the country as well as humanitarian grounds”, the statement said.
The amnesty is the fourth such granted to prisoners since the new government assumed office March 30 last year. A total of 6,656 prisoners were freed last week to mark the country’s 64th Independence Day.
Under two amnesty orders last year, the government had freed 14,758 and 6,359 prisoners in May and October.
