Muralidharan asked to wait before rejoining Congress
May 24th, 2010 - 6:05 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 24 (IANS) Congress’s former Kerala unit chief K. Muralidharan Monday said that he was expecting to be re-inducted into the party before the upcoming civic polls in the state but has been asked to wait.
“The central leadership will take a decision regarding my re-entry into the party-fold after discussing with the Congress’s state leadership,” Muralidharan told IANS after meeting the party’s Kerala in-charge Mohsina Kidwai here.
He said Kidwai asked him to wait till the state Congress leadership gives its nod for his entry but told him to work for the Congress in the upcoming civic polls.
“I hope the central leadership will take a decision on my re-induction before the state goes for civic polls later this year,” Muralidharan, the son of Congress leader and former chief minister K. Karunakaran, said.
Muralidharan’s re-induction is strongly opposed by a section of Congress leaders in the state including Kerala unit president Ramesh Chennithala, Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi.
He had severed ties with the party before floating the Democratic Indira Congress (DIC) along with his father a few years ago. Later, the DIC merged with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Karunakaran rejoined the Congress while Muralidharan opted to stay with the NCP.
Muralidharan contested the 2009 Lok Sabha polls from the Wayanad constituency on the NCP ticket but lost to a Congress candidate.
He was also expelled from the NCP after he openly expressed his wishes to rejoin the Congress.
